Obituary Text Greg Allen Petersen, born Dec 15, 1948, passed away April 21, 2022, at the age of 73 after a courageous fight with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS -blood cancer).

Born in Milford, Nebraska and grew up in in South Sioux City, he was born to Catherine (Kate) Brott and adopted by Charles and Carol Petersen. All Greg’s parents have preceded him in death as well as his brother Robert Cain and sister Betty Jo Morris.

Greg is survived by his wife Carey Petersen, his sister Nancy Chambers (Curt Merritt) and brother James (Jimmy) Cain (Della), his children Tony (Denicia) Petersen & Amy Petersen-Fites, Michael Arroyo & Rachel (Ashlee) Arroyo. Greg also has eight grandchildren.

What a colorful life Greg has lived, an inspiration to all who met him at church and so many other places in-between. An Army veteran who proudly served in Vietnam and continued to honor those who have served by participating in the Patriot Guard Riders and other Military-based organizations like Wreaths Across America. Greg also had an affinity for being Santa Claus for over 40 years!

Most importantly, Greg would find time to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with many people. A common face at the Creek Church in Fort Worth, Greg was the founder of two widely attended life groups. The “Over 55 group” grew beyond 20 people and continues to be close knit family that enjoys fellowship and prayer. He also started a men’s group that started with just 4 guys sitting around his dining room table and has grown to over 30 men that study the Bible weekly! Greg served in so many capacities at the church that he got to demonstrate the love of Jesus in multiple ways.

Outside of church, Greg worked several diverse jobs. He spent time working on the Alaskan pipeline, raised police and guard dogs, owned a bookstore, ran a pizza place, driver for the railroad crews, car sales and finance, and worked for TruGreen and Dickies Arena. He was also an entrepreneur, starting his own pest control business in San Antonio that he ran for over 20 years. He served as the president of the San Antonio Pest Control Association for a short time and then started another one here in the DFW area.

When not working, Greg loved fishing (sometimes catching turtles), camping, his dogs, playing dominoes with friends, and playing the congas. And of course, he loved the Cowboys, Nebraska College Football and rooting for the Spurs too.

*** SAFETY NOTICE ***

Before volunteering and/or attending any North Texas Patriot Guard Riders missions we encourage you to review all safety information below.

Included are some potential safety concerns to be aware of, however this does not include the full scope of all potential hazards.

Anyone attending any North Texas Patriot Guard Riders mission understands that they do so at their own risk.

High Temperatures

It’s every RIDER’S PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY to hydrate prior to attending a mission.

Begin drinking water the night before.  Drink water when you wake up and continue drinking water all day to ensure your body stays hydrated.  It should be noted that excessive use of alcohol, coffee, tea, or sodas act as diuretics and tend to dehydrate rather than hydrate.  The use of Powerade or Gatorade or any of the small packets of powder designed to help replace the electrolytes lost from perspiration is important.  The use of cooling towels is important also as they tend to help keep your body temperature down.

If at any time you feel the need, let someone know that you are stepping away from the Flag Line, and find a cool spot to get out of the heat.  Don’t wait until your body collapses.  It is much easier to take a seat and get a cold towel rather than to call EMS for heat stroke.  The family will understand.  If this does occur, please have your emergency card on you so that we can notify a family member. Hope-fully the break will be all you need.  Secondly, if you are riding a bike, please be sure to hydrate again before making the ride home.  Take another 10-15 minutes to cool down then start the ride.  Ideally, stop at an air-conditioned restaurant for something to eat.

Funeral Processions/Escorts

EVERY RIDER IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for their own safety at all times while riding in a funeral procession.

At NO TIME are any riders authorized to block any intersection or otherwise block or impede traffic laws in any way.  Only Law Enforcement officials are authorized to block and/or impeded the lawful flow of traffic.

If you choose to fly a flag on your bike you are SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for ensuring it is secured and not a danger to any other rider or traffic.
